The red carpet wasn’t always about awards, film festivals; Here’s a little bit about its history

Be it Bollywood or Hollywood, the red carpet is synonymous with prestige, status, style and grandeur for stars in the film industries. Events such as the Oscars and the Cannes Film Festival, as well as major award ceremonies, gala events and premieres around the world, are great examples.

Apart from this, a red carpet is also associated with the honor and respect of a person. Many often give special guests the red carpet treatment at events and restaurants are held in high esteem.

However, the red carpet was not always associated with award shows and ceremonies. It goes back to Greek tragedy in 458 BC, when it was used for high-ranking dignitaries and royals.

According to a BBC report, the first known red-carpet Earth was created by the Greek playwright Aeschylus in Agamemnon in 458 BC. “It came to our notice then. The red carpet is associated with kings and emperors,” said Sonnet Stanfil, curator of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Some references to the red carpet appearing at special ceremonies can be found in history.

Its journey into Hollywood began at the premiere of Robin Hood at the Egyptian Theater in 1922. At the time, American showman and theater owner Sid Grauman laid the carpet, and actor Douglas Fairbanks became the first celebrity to receive the honor.

Later, in 1961, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made its red carpet debut at the 33rd Academy Awards.

Meanwhile, the phrase “red-carpet treatment” gradually dropped from the royals and became used for high-ranking dignitaries. In 1821, the carpet was prepared for James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States, when he arrived in Georgetown, South Carolina.

However, the origins of the red-carpet treatment are thought to date back to the promotion of the 20th Century Limited, an express passenger train that ran on the New York Central Railroad from 1902 to 1967.

Train passengers were greeted with a red carpet at Grand Central Station, giving a glimpse of the sumptuous treatment provided by the train staff during the journey.
