MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – 9th Nov, 2022) The European Commission on Tuesday announced an investigation into Microsoft’s deal to buy Activision Blizzard, saying it was concerned that the acquisition would reduce competition in the video game market.

“The key is to ensure that the gaming ecosystem remains alive for the benefit of users in a rapidly evolving sector. Our detailed investigation will assess how the deal affects the gaming supply chain,” said Margrethe Vestager, head of competition. . . .

The US tech giant announced in January a plan to buy its rival for $69 billion in cash to create the world’s third-largest gaming company by revenue, behind China’s Tencent and Japan’s Sony.

The EU’s chief executive is concerned that Microsoft could amass enough power to push rivals out of an increasingly lucrative market by blocking distributors’ access to Activision Blizzard’s consoles and video games, particularly blockbusters such as “Call of Duty” and “Warcraft .”

“When it comes to multiplayer subscription services and/or cloud game streaming services, in particular, the Commission is concerned that by acquiring Activision Blizzard, Microsoft could foreclose access, to the detriment of competing distributors,” she said.

Microsoft said the deal would strengthen its subscription-based Game Pass collection of over 25 million users by including Activision Blizzard games in Game Pass. Activision Blizzard has 400 million monthly active players in 190 countries and a three billion dollar franchise.
