India has invited Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif to attend a high-level meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). According to reports, the defense ministerial level meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will be held in New Delhi in the month of April. For this, the Government of India has sent a formal invitation to Pakistan’s Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday. However, there was no immediate confirmation from New Delhi on Pakistani media reports in this regard.
Discussions at the level of the Minister of Defense will be held in April
What is interesting is that India currently holds the chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. In such circumstances, many meetings are to be held in India as the President of the SCO this year. In this order, the meeting of the foreign ministers will be held in Goa in May, while the meeting of the defense ministers will be held in New Delhi in the month of April.
Earlier, India had invited Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial as well as extended an invitation to Pakistan to attend the SCO foreign ministers’ meeting, The Express Tribune reported. However, Pakistan had finally decided on the visit of Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial. He did not attend the SCO Chief Justice meeting. In his place, Justice Munib Akhtar attended the meeting in virtual mode.
There are suspicions about the participation of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Defense Minister Asif in meetings in India
Furthermore, the Pakistani government has said with reference to these invitations that it has not yet decided whether Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari or Defense Minister Khawaja Asif will attend the meetings in India. Pakistan’s foreign ministry has said that a decision will be taken at an appropriate time.
India has also invited Bilawal
Bilawal and Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang are among the foreign ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states, which India has invited to the meeting in May.
Explain that if the Pakistani Foreign Minister attends the meeting in person, it will be the first such visit from Islamabad to India since 2011. In 2011, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar visited India. Khar is currently serving as the Secretary of State. In May 2014, the then Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, visited India to attend the inauguration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After this, in December 2015, then India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj visited Pakistan and a few days later, Prime Minister Modi paid a brief visit to the neighboring country.
Things got worse
In February 2019, India launched an airstrike in response to the Pulwama terror attack. After that, relations between India and Pakistan were very strained. Later that year in August, India announced the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir and the division of the former state into a union territory. Because of all this, relations between the countries deteriorated further.
These countries are included in the SCO
The SCO was established in 2001 at the Shanghai Summit. In recent years, this organization has emerged as one of the largest interregional international organizations. India and Pakistan became permanent members of the Beijing-based SCO in 2017. This organization includes China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
