Six months after essentially giving the nod to develop Lucknow and its surrounding areas as the state capital along with Delhi’s National Capital Region (NCR), Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath gave two weeks to officials to come up with a “detailed action plan” for that.

He also directed officials of the housing department to conduct a preliminary study and prepare an integrated development plan to connect Varanasi district with the border districts of Bhadohi, Ghazipur, Ballia and Chandauli much on NCR lines.

“According to the vision of the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi), the ancient city of Kashi (Varanasi) today is becoming a fusion of nature, culture and adventure. Due to the development work in Kashi, the potential of the surrounding districts has also expanded…For the purpose of planning development like the capital area, an integrated development plan has been prepared connecting Varanasi district with its borders,” a press release issued by the government quoted the CM as saying at the meeting.

Varanasi is also the Lok Sabha constituency of Prime Minister Modi.

The CM said this was a “significant effort to accelerate the economic progress of eastern UP”.

According to sources, the decision was taken as ill-conceived development has been noticed in the surrounding districts of Lucknow amid growing population pressure.

Reviewing the development work of Varanasi, the CM directed officials to ensure that sanitation works are planned at Manikarnika Ghat and Harishchandra Ghat. At the same time, there are also toilets for the disabled. Further instructions were given to complete the work of ‘Varuna Corridor’ in Varanasi, the government said.

Meanwhile, the CM also directed the appointment of urban planners in all development authorities. The CM directed to set up ‘Uttar Pradesh Information and Tourism Centres’ in all major cities of the state to promote the state’s ‘cultural, spiritual and industrial’ potential.

While reviewing development works in Ayodhya, where a grand Ram temple is being constructed, the CM directed officials to set up women’s changing rooms at Ram Ji ki Paidi and Naya Ghat and start sanitation drives at all ghats of Saryu river.
