New Delhi: There is an increase in pollution levels this year, as in 2020, during the difficult period of the pandemic, several phases of lockdown were imposed, which had a positive impact on pollution. This is revealed by a new analysis of regional pollution trends conducted by the Center for Science and Environment (CSE).

This analysis of real-time air quality data for the period 2019-2021 shows that the decline in pollution which was driven by the difficult lockdown phases of the pandemic in 2020, was earlier in 2021, said Anumita Roychowdhury, executive director of research department at CSE. Already warning of bounce again with rising levels. However, in many cases the pollution level is still lower than in 2019.

As a result, India’s eastern states – Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha – are now feeling the brunt of rising air pollution, the study showed.

The winter smog that engulfs North India in early November starts moving eastwards in late December and early January, affecting Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha.

Avikal Somvanshi, Program Manager, Urban Data Analytics Lab, CSE, said, “Air quality monitoring has begun to expand to provide more up-to-date and realistic information on air quality in these states. There are serious concerns about missing data and gaps, which make proper risk assessment difficult. Data availability in some stations of Bihar and Odisha is so low that trend cannot be assessed. Quality control of data is essential.
