The Islamabad Sessions Court issued an arrest warrant against Khan last week and adjourned the hearing till March 7 due to his repeated failure to appear before the court.

Television footage on Sunday showed uniformed police officers from the Islamabad police as well as the Punjab police holding back Khan’s supporters outside his home.

With the Islamabad police present outside his residence to hand over the court’s order, Khan addressed a gathering of jailed Bharo Tehreek’ (Judicial Arrest Movement) workers at his residence.

Khan was ousted in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote, which he said was part of a US-led conspiracy that targeted him over his independent foreign policy decisions on Russia, China and Afghanistan.

Since his ouster, Khan has called for immediate elections to install what he called an “imported government” led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Sharif has insisted that elections will be held later this year when the parliament ends its five-year term.
