The Union Ministry of Health is concerned about meeting the shortage of staff in medical facilities throughout the country. The possibility of starting centralized recruitment for faculty and external departments in various All India Institutes of Medical Science (AIIMS) across India is being explored. The committee has included Dr VK Pal, Member (Health) NITI Aayog, Additional Secretary, Piyush, Ministry of Health and Director, AIIMS New Delhi in this regard. Following the Central Institute Body (CIB) meeting held at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar on January 8, emphasis has been laid on strengthening the recruitment process for faculty and non-faculty faculty at various AIIMS.

The ministry told the Lok Sabha last year that about 44 percent of faculty posts in the 18 new AIIMS are vacant, with AIIMS Rajkot being the lowest with just 40 departments out of 183 recognized posts. After AIIMS Rajkot, AIIMS Vijaypur and AIIMS Gorakhpur have the smallest department in terms of number of recognized posts. The ministry had said that sufficient faculty posts have been sanctioned by the government for all newly established All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to teach MBBS students.

According to an official source, the central recruitment system will make the process of departmental and non-departmental appointments more transparent and streamlined. Apart from this, it will also facilitate their transfer from one AIIMS to another AIIMS. Currently, these AIIMS recruit their employees. It has been observed that talented physicians are reluctant to apply for positions outside their home states or in hard-to-reach areas.

Meanwhile, a committee has been appointed to explore the possibility of introducing centralized recruitment. This information is also mentioned in the order issued on February 28.
