CWG 2022: India bagged its fifth gold medal in wrestling at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022. One of India’s biggest hopes, superstar wrestler Vinesh Phogat won the gold medal in the 53 kg category.

Birmingham Commonwealth India bagged its fifth gold medal in wrestling at the Games 2022 (Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022). One of India’s biggest hopes, superstar wrestler Vinesh Phogat won the gold medal in the 53 kg category. Veteran wrestler Vinesh won all three bouts in this category from the Nordic pattern. By scoring the most points, he won the gold medal. Through this, Vinesh achieved an amazing hat-trick by winning the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games for the third time in a row.

Vinesh had previously won gold in the 48 kg category at the 2014 Glasgow Games and 50 kg at the 2018 Gold Coast Games. After this, he now won gold in 53 kg for the third time in CWG. Not only this, with this medal Vinesh will reduce the disappointment of last year’s Tokyo Olympics to some extent. Everyone expected Vinesh to win a medal in Tokyo but he could not win. Now after a year he has won an important medal.

What is the Nordic format?

The match was not easy for Vinesh, where the wrestlers were divided into two different groups, followed by the final. The match was played in Nordic style. Basically, the Nordic format is used when there are no more than 6 competitors in a weight division. In such a situation all the wrestlers have to compete against each other under ‘Round Robin’. Based on that, whoever has the most points will get the gold.

By this there were only 4 wrestlers in Vinesh’s 53 kg category. Apart from India, there were also wrestlers from Canada, Nigeria and Sri Lanka. Vinesh won all the three matches he played and won the gold medal with the highest score. Vinesh defeated the Sri Lankan wrestler in the last bout to complete a clean sweep. Along with this he gave India fifth and 11th gold medal in wrestling.
