absconding building owner arrested after burning 27 to death in mundka tragedy of delhi

The owner of a building in Delhi’s Mundka, where 27 people were killed, has been arrested two days after Sunday’s incident.

On Friday, 27 people, including 21 women, were killed in a fire that broke out on the first floor of the four-storey building.

“We have raided Delhi and Haryana and arrested the absconding building owner Manish Lakra,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (External) Sameer Sharma said. Lakhra is a resident of Mundka village.

After the fire broke out in the building, the owner of the building, who lived on the top floor, fled with his wife and children. Initial investigation revealed that Manish Lakra felt that something was burning. Hence, he fled from the neighbor’s terrace and eloped with the family.

An FIR has been registered against the absconding owner since the day of the fire. Police is probing the matter and all those involved will be punished.

According to sources, the owner of the building was Manish’s father. However, it was handed over to Manish after his father’s death and he took over the building in 2011.

The building did not have the required clearances and no tenant verification was done.

Police said it may take 5-10 days to complete the DNA sampling on the victims and then return the bodies to the family.

Meanwhile, troubled family members of Mundka fire victims, who are still missing, waited for their loved ones outside Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital on Sunday as 19 bodies are yet to be identified. Nineteen people are still missing and there was little hope of their survival.

Officials said the North Delhi Municipal Corporation on Saturday sought a detailed report from Narela zone officials including the type of building area and likely year of construction in Mundka, where at least 27 people lost their lives.

The North Delhi civic body ordered the zonal commissioners to conduct a detailed survey in their areas to ascertain whether any prohibited activity is going on in the non-conforming areas to prevent recurrence of such tragic incident.
